Frequently Asked Questions
If you are storing PREempt Ready To Use solution or diluted PREempt Concentrate in a new secondary container such as a spray bottle, printed workplace/secondary product labels are available to allow you to record important product information and the expiration date of the solution. The labels help you and your staff identify the solution in the bottle to ensure you meet workplace health and safety standards. These secondary labels can be downloaded and printed on our website here or ordered through your distributor of PREempt Disinfectants.
When using the larger 3.78 L Ready To Use size to refill spray bottles, ensure any secondary containers are emptied, rinsed and dried prior to refilling with new solution to make certain it's effective every time. Remember also to place on a workplace/secondary label and write the expiration date on any new bottles, for easy identification.
PREempt Ready To Use can be used to disinfect quickly and effectively throughout your facility, following just four simple steps:
1. If required, pre-clean any visible dirt or debris from the surface.
2. Spray or foam the solution evenly onto the surface.
3. Allow the surface to remain wet for 3 minutes.
4. Leave to air dry or if preferred, wipe any excess solution using a clean cloth.
Some disinfectants begin losing their efficacy over time, but PREempt Ready To Use and Wipes remain effective for up to 2 years opened or unopened, from date of manufacturing.
PREempt Concentrate remains effective for up to 2 years opened or unopened, from the date of manufacturing. Once diluted, the solution is effective for up to 30 days in containers such as spray bottles.
PREempt HLD5 and CS20 remain effective for up to 1 year opened or unopened from the date of manufacturing. When poured into soaking trays or containers for tool immersion, the re-use solution lasts for up to 14 days*. *The solution must be discarded after 14 days or sooner as dictated by Test Strips. Read label for full list of claims and use-directions.
Remember to always refer to the printed expiration date on the product label.
You work hard to create a relaxing ambiance for your clients, so the last thing you want is harsh chemical odours from the products you use. Unlike commonly used disinfectants such as bleach and alcohol-based products, PREempt has no harsh chemical smell that interferes with the ambiance within your environment.
In accordance with the SDS (Safety Data Sheet), PREempt Ready To Use,Wipes and diluted Concentrate do not require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling the product. However, we recommend the use of gloves as a general practice when disinfecting, to help minimize the risk of disease transmission.
PREempt Wipes are effective against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in a 3-minute contact time. No, we do not recommend mixing anything with PREempt Disinfectants. To ensure the safety profile of PREempt (non-sensitizing, non-irritating to eyes and skin), as well as to ensure the efficacy of the product, we do not suggest mixing anything with PREempt.
The streaking you may observe, particularly on surfaces such as clear plastics or glass, is caused by the commonly used, safe detergents in PREempt Disinfectants. The active ingredient in PREempt is hydrogen peroxide. Once PREempt dries on a surface, the hydrogen peroxide evaporates into oxygen and water, leaving no active ingredient behind on the surface. What is left behind and possibly leaving streaks are the detergents, similar to household dish soap. If desired, periodically wipe the surface with a damp, clean cloth after the contact time is met. This will help remove any remaining detergents on certain surfaces and equipment.
PREempt is compatible with a wide range of commonly used materials, including stainless steel, laminate, porcelain, ceramics, high & low density plastics, resins and silicon rubber, among others. PREempt is ideal for use on a variety of hard, non-porous surfaces, including:
• Chairs/stools
• Countertops
• Drying stations
• Facial equipment
• Hot towel cabinets
• Magnifying lamps and table lamps
• Massage cups and stones
• Non-circulating footbaths
• Oil/lotion pumps
• Reception areas
• Sink areas
• Spa/massage tables & face cradles
PREempt Disinfectants are effective against a wide range of pathogens that matter most to your business. For a list of claims for each product, check out the reference sheets below:
There are a few different reasons why your solution may be turning cloudy or discolored before the end of the reuse period, for example, improper storage, contamination from soils, or incompatible tools or containers. Here are a few important things to remember:
• During the 14-day reuse period, there are test strips that should be used in the solution between each use to ensure that the solution is still maintaining the same disinfecting efficacy on days 2, 5, 10, etc. The AHP2 test strips are designed for Preempt HLD5, and the AHP7 test strips (add links) for Preempt CS20. The solution should be replaced immediately if the test strips do not read the solution as being at the correct concentration or if the solution is visibly contaminated with any dirt or soil.
• The solution must be stored in a tray with a lid to avoid any contamination.
• Your tools should always be pre-cleaned using water and a detergent, rinsed with clean water, and dried prior to being placed in the soaking tray with the disinfectant solution. If soils are not properly removed, they can contaminate the solution, leading to cloudiness and potentially impacting efficacy, and the solution would need to be disposed of.
• It is important not to leave your tools soaking in the PREempt HLD5 or CS20 solutions for longer than the required soak time. As soon as the soaking time has been achieved, you should remove the tools and rinse them with water, then dry them and store them in a sealed container until their next use.
If you are following these directions for storage and use appropriately, and you are still noticing cloudy or discolored solutions, this can be an indicator that there is a compatibility issue with your tools. You may wish to contact your tool manufacturer for their suggestions or recommendations for cleaning and disinfection, as they may have experience with certain solutions or practices that they do or do not recommend for their tools.
No, PREempt HLD5 and PREempt CS20 cannot be used as surface disinfectants and are not intended for those applications. PREempt HLD5 and PREempt CS20 are high-level disinfectants solely designed for tool immersion for items such as nail clippers, nippers, tweezers, nail files, and foot files.
For surface disinfection, PREempt Wipes, Ready-to-Use (RTU), and Concentrate Disinfectants are the ideal choices as they are intended for use on hard, non-porous surfaces such as countertops, tables, chairs, and more.
You can use any chemical-resistant plastic or medical-grade stainless steel tray that has a lid for proper storage. Using a shallow and wider tray is beneficial as it will allow you to spread your tools out in the solution more easily, thus allowing complete immersion in the disinfectant solution, ensuring full contact with the entire instrument/tool during the soaking period.
Store recently cleaned and disinfected tools in a clean, covered, and labeled container. Never store contaminated tools with disinfected implements.
Cleaning: The physical removal of foreign material and organic material. Cleaning helps to physically remove soils and pathogens rather than inactivating microorganisms. It may be accomplished with water, detergents, and mechanical action, and is often a necessary first step prior to disinfection. surface. PREempt Disinfectants are effective one-step disinfectant cleaners with powerful detergents to help ensure quick and easy cleaning.
Low/intermediate Level Disinfection: Surfaces and non-critical devices that only come into contact with intact skin, require low or intermediate level disinfection. Low to intermediate-level disinfection involves the destruction of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Rest assured, PREempt Disinfectant Wipes, Ready-to-Use and Concentrate products meet these requirements.
High-Level Disinfection: Semi-critical devices are devices that may break the skin or come into contact with mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, etc.) during use but are not intended to penetrate skin or contact normally sterile tissue. Examples include nail clippers, nippers, tweezers, nail files, foot files, lash tweezers, etc. Semi-critical devices typically require high-level disinfection for appropriate reprocessing. High-level disinfection eliminates bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even some spores. Both PREempt HLD5 and PREempt CS20 meet the requirements for High-Level Disinfection and are an ideal choice for tool immersion.
Sterilization: Critical devices are those that penetrate the skin or mucous membranes to enter normally sterile tissue or have direct contact with the bloodstream. Examples include foot care equipment, surgical tools, eye equipment, etc. Critical devices require sterilization, to prevent disease transmission by microbial contamination. Sterilization typically is achieved through autoclaving which results in the destruction of all forms of microbial life including bacteria, viruses, spores, and fungi.
Always check your local personal services guidelines to verify what level of disinfection is required for your service's tools and equipment.
PREempt HLD5 and PREempt CS20 can be reused for tool immersion for up to 14 days in a soaking tray, provided there are no visible dirt or particles, and that test strips are used to confirm there has been no loss of efficacy.
The solution should be poured into a soaking tray for tool disinfection. In order to store it properly during the 14-day reuse period, please make sure you are storing it in a tray with a lid to avoid any potential contamination.
Additionally, you should be using test strips to confirm that there has been no loss of efficacy over time during the reuse period. The AHP2 test strips are designed for Preempt HLD5, and the AHP7 test strips for PREempt CS20.
When using the test strips, if they do not demonstrate a pass, this is another indicator that the solution should be replaced right away. Please note the solution should never be topped up to try to achieve a correct reading on the test strip, rather it should be fully replaced with fresh solution.
We'd recommend using the re-use solution log chart to help keep track of the solution use, test times, results, and comments to help with any future health inspections.
If dealing with an expired solution, you can safely and easily dispose of it following the recommendations below to minimize wear and tear on equipment and the environment.
For small quantities (<4L):
1. Turn on the cold-water tap.
2. Dilute the solution at a 1:10 ratio with water.
3. Pour the solution down the drain with water running.
4. Allow water to run for 5 minutes.
At no time should this document replace existing documents established by the facility, municipal, or provincial bodies.
Multi-use/Reusable Tools: These tools are made from hard, non-porous materials (e.g., glass, stainless steel, or hard plastic) and can endure frequent cleaning and disinfection between uses. Examples typically include glass and metal nail files, tweezers, and metal drill bits. Always check your regional personal service guidelines to confirm.
Single-Use Tools: These tools are typically made from porous materials (foam, paper, wood, etc.) and cannot be effectively cleaned and disinfected. The manufacturer may also state they are single-use tools. All single-use tools must be disposed of after each client and must not be reused on another client. Examples typically include emery boards, wooden cuticle pushers, and pumice stones. Always check your regional personal service guidelines to confirm.
No, PREempt HLD5 and PREempt CS20 are ready-to-use, meaning they're pre-mixed. The solutions, therefore, can be poured straight from the container into your soaking tray. The disinfectants should not be diluted as this will impact the effectiveness of the solution, and disinfection cannot be ensured.
As of early 2018, Health Canada announced that high-level disinfectant and sterilant solutions intended for use on medical devices will now be classified as medical devices under MDSAP. With this classification, high-level disinfectants and sterilant solutions for use on medical devices and personal service tools will now fall under the definition of a Class II medical device and will no longer be registered as a Disinfectant Drug or carry a Drug Identification Number (DIN).
Therefore, PREempt HLD5 and PREempt CS20 no longer have DINs and now have the required Health Canada Class II Medical Device licenses. PREempt HLD5s Medical Licence Number is #103056 and PREempt CS20s is #103055. Rest assured, Canadian surface disinfectant products such as PREempt Wipes, Ready-To-Use and Concentrate all remain as Health Canada DIN Registered Products with DINs
